Information and images placed on the public areas of the departmental website is then available widely and openly. Given this wide access personal data and images of specific individuals should only be made publicly available in this way with the prior awareness and consent of the individual concerned.

Photographic images of individuals and small groups can be defined as personal data and therefore fall within the scope of the Data Protection Act (DPA). However, there is some legal ambiguity about exactly which types of photographs and images of people constitute personal data. To err on the side of caution processing of such data should be in accordance with the data protection principles.
