The theory of homogenization is the determination of effective, or macroscopic properties of solutions of PDE which vary at a microscopic scale.

In other words, the goal is to find the PDE describing the trend of the solution. This is particularly important for applications where the computation of the fine scale solution would be computationally infeasible and when the precise microscopic structure of the physical medium is unknown.
