Fridays@4

Fridays@4 is a programme of weekly events for graduate students, postdoctoral research associates and research fellows (on Fridays at 4-5).  It covers many important aspects of academic life and the next step in your career, whether within or outside academia. It is also a social event where you get the chance to meet people from across the Mathematical Institute. Topics include:

  • How to manage your PhD supervisor.
  • Dos and don’ts for research talks.
  • Imposter syndrome and mental health awareness.
  • Tips for preparing academic job and grant applications.
  • Careers outside academia.

We are always open for new Fridays@4 topics to be suggested as we want the programme to be as helpful as possible. If you have ideas for what you would like us to cover, please email the lead faculty organizer: Peter Grindrod

North Meets South: As part of Fridays@4, we also run two sessions in each term named North Meets South where two early career researchers - one from Pure and one from Applied - give a talk on their research that is accessible to the entire department. These are organized and chaired by two early career researchers.

Colloquia: The regular departmental colloquia and some named lectures also take place in the Fridays@4 slot.

Fridays@4 takes place in L1 4-5pm and is followed by Happy Hour in the Common Room 5-6pm. The Maths Institute calendar contains details of past and upcoming sessions. Make Fridays@4 part of your weekly routine!
