Tips for a DPhil Application

Why do a PhD?

If you are considering applying for a DPhil with us (a DPhil is what we call a PhD at Oxford) then you should definitely watch Professor Melanie Rupflin explain some of the key things to consider as well as the potential benefits that will result from your doctoral studies.

Tips when making a PhD (DPhil) Application

  1. Take a good look at the research groups at Oxford and identify which align best with your interests.
  2. If you would like to work with a particular supervisor because you have a particular research proposal, you can write to them to ask if they will be taking on new students.
  3. Make sure you carefully read the entry requirements and can meet them.
  4. Follow the How to Apply guidance carefully
    1. Field and Title of Research Project: listing the research groups you want your application to be considered by helps us to route to the right place, so please add this!
    2. If you are listing supervisors, please make sure they match up to the research groups you've entered.
  5. Give your referees enough notice so that they can get references in by the deadline.
  6. Try to avoid submitting your application on the deadline day - you are far more likely to experience technical difficulties due to the volume of traffic on the website.
