Continue to test twice a week

All students who are currently living in Oxford are strongly encouraged to continue to test twice a week in order to identify COVID-19 cases where people aren’t showing symptoms. This includes those of us who have been vaccinated. Omicron is more contagious than previous variants and can still pose a serious health risk for certain people so please test regularly to minimise the risk to our community and to prevent disruption to academic studies.

On Wednesday András Juhász and Marc Lackenby published a paper in Nature (and on its cover) in collaboration with authors from DeepMind and with Geordie Williamson at the University of Sydney. The paper describes a new crossover between the fields of mathematics and machine learning, where tools from machine learning have been used to discover new patterns in mathematics.

The University’s health guidance has been expanded, following a number of queries about what staff and students should do if they are unwell with non-COVID-19 respiratory infections. Under Government guidance, anyone with COVID-19 symptoms must stay at home and self-isolate until they have received a negative PCR test result. They must also self-isolate if they live in the same household as someone with COVID-19, unless they are exempt (for example, if they have had a full course of a COVID-19 vaccine in the UK).

For those of you who are new or who need a top up, we have a range of Oxford Mathematics merchandise from hoodies to mugs via bags and t-shirts and notebooks. Because we can't sell though the usual route of cafe or the University online store (now closed), if you wish to buy merchandise please email Dyrol (@email) to arrange a time to shop.

Cash only unfortunately, until we can find a way to take cards or Bitcoin.

It's World Mental Heath Day on Sunday 10 October, and to better support the mental health and wellbeing of staff and students, we have recently appointed a cohort of Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs) who completed their training in July. Mental Health First Aiders provide an extra layer of support within the department. They are trained to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing poor mental health by listening, reassuring, responding, and signposting people to appropriate internal and external support.
