EDI Committee
The Mathematical Institute is committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. We recognise that mathematics advances through diverse approaches and perspectives, and we work to ensure all members of our community feel valued in their academic and professional pursuits.
Our committee's work
The EDI Committee, chaired by Professor Ian Hewitt, actively works to embed equality, diversity, and inclusion into all aspects of departmental life through:
- Promoting visibility and representation
- Implementing inclusive policies
- Providing comprehensive community support
Guiding frameworks
Our work is guided by key documents including:
- Good Practice Statement
- Race Equality Action Plan
- London Mathematical Society's Good Practice Scheme
- Athena Swan Charter principles
Creating an inclusive environment
We have established clear policies that prohibit discrimination and ensure everyone feels respected and valued. Our approach goes beyond prevention, actively creating spaces where different perspectives are welcomed and innovative thinking can emerge.
Supporting community connections
The committee supports a number of vibrant networks offering social events, discussion groups, and professional development opportunities. These networks provide a supportive community for staff and students to connect and engage with one another.
Training and awareness events
We provide regular training sessions covering:
- Understanding diverse identities
- Mental health support
- Addressing unconscious or implicit bias
- Promoting cultural competence
We celebrate key events throughout the year, including International Women's Day and Oxford Pride, highlighting contributions from diverse communities.
Get involved
We encourage all members of our community to participate in our initiatives through attending events, joining training sessions, and engaging with our networks.
