ECRs – Career Development Reviews (CDRs)

The Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers is an agreement between employers of researchers and research funders on the expectations for the professional development and employment conditions of researchers in the UK, signed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Louise Richardson in April 2021. The Concordat seeks to create the healthy and supportive culture needed to ensure our researchers are given every opportunity to thrive and realise their potential in the increasingly diverse, mobile and global environment in which we work.

More information can be found here.

We aim to make the department an outstanding workplace for researchers, where researchers’ contributions are celebrated and their professional and career goals are fully supported - and we strongly encourage you to prioritise the Concordat's requirement of 10 days each year to focus on your own career development.

ECRs in the department should normally have an annual Career Development Review, following their successful 12-month probation. The purpose of a Career & Development Review (CDR) is to give researchers an opportunity to reflect on their current work, and develop an ambitious plan for the future (see an example form below).

The department has two Advisors for Early Career Researchers (AECR), Professors Coralia Curtis and Xenia de la Ossa. An AECR will contact you to arrange an individual meeting; if you have not heard from an AECR within a month of your arrival in the department, please email @email. In particular, the AECR will discuss with you the department's Career Development Review for ECRs.
