2024

• Congratulations to our Post-Doc Research, Dr Alexandra Holzinger, who has received the Hannspeter-Winter Prize of TU Wien of 2023! The prize recognizes outstanding scientific achievements made by women in the field of research and technology.
• We are delighted to announce that Prof. Gui-Qiang G. Chen has been awarded the 2024 Pólya Prize by the London Mathematical Society “for his deep research into nonlinear partial differential equations, and in particular his rigorous theoretical analysis of the equations of gas dynamics, especially those involving transonic flows.”   The Pólya Prize is awarded in recognition of outstanding creativity in, imaginative exposition of, or distinguished contribution to, mathematics within the United Kingdom. • Prof. Gui-Qiang G. Chen was awarded the Oxford Higher Doctorate Degree – Doctor of Science (DSc)  by the University of Oxford, presided over by the Vice-Chancellor on the 27^th July 2024.

2023

• We are delighted to announce that Angkana Rüland, former OxPDE postdoctoral fellow (2014-17), is one of the recipients of the 2024 New Horizons in Mathematics Prize, associated with the Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics, "for contributions to applied analysis, in particular, the analysis of microstructure in solid-solid phase transitions and the theory of inverse problems". She is now a Professor in Mathematics and Holder of a Hausdorff Chair in Mathematics at the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics at the University of Bonn.
• Congratulations to Qian Wang, who has been awarded the title of Professor by the University.
• Congratulations to José Carrillo, who has been elected to Academia Europaea. He joins 15 other Oxford Mathematicians in the Academy. The Academy seeks the advancement and propagation of excellence in scholarship in the humanities, law, the economic, social, and political sciences, mathematics, medicine, and all branches of natural and technological sciences anywhere in the world for the public benefit and for the advancement of the education of the public of all ages in the aforesaid subjects in Europe.
• We are delighted to announce that our OxPDE (PDE-CDT) alumnus Dr. Cristiana De Filippis has been elected as one of the first 30 early-career European mathematicians to the Young Academy of the European Mathematical Society (EMYA). Please click here for further details.
• Congratulations to Luis A. Caffarelli, who has been awarded the 2023 Abel Prize in recognition of his “seminal contributions to regularity theory for nonlinear partial differential equations including free-boundary problems and the Monge–Ampère equation"!   Professor Luis A. Caffarelli served on our OxPDE Scientific Steering Committee (2007-14), as well as the Steering Committee of our EPSRC Doctoral Training Centre in PDEs (PDE-CDT) (2014-23).
• Congratulations to Dr Kaibo Hu, who has been awarded the 2023 SIAM Early Career Prize in Computational Science and Engineering.

• We are delighted to announce Prof. Endre Suli has been awarded the 2021 LMS Naylor Prize and Lectureship in Applied Mathematics.
• The EPSRC Network "Generalised and Low-Regularity Solutions of Nonlinear PDEs" has been awarded funding and is starting on 1 July 2021, with six research nodes spreading across the UK. The Oxbridge (Oxford & Cambridge) Research Node is led by Professor Gui-Qiang G. Chen - further details and website are to follow.

2019

• Welcome to Andrea Mondino, who has joined OxPDE as Associate Professor of the Analysis of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations. Prof. Mondino is also Tutorial Fellow in Pure Mathematics at St Hilda's College.
• Congratulations to Karen Keskulla Uhlenbeck for becoming the first woman to win the 2019 Abel Prize in recognition of her "pioneering achievements in geometric partial differential equations, gauge theory and integrable systems and for the fundamental impact of her work on analysis, geometry and mathematical physics". 

2018

• Professor Gui-Qiang G. Chen has been appointed Director of the Oxford Centre for Nonlinear PDE (OxPDE) with effect from 1 October 2018.
• The journey of the applied mathematician - retiring Sedleian Professor Sir John Ball reflects.

• John Ball has won the European Academy of Sciences 2018 Leonardo da Vinci award for for outstanding lifetime scientific achievement.

2016

• Prof Gui-Qiang Chen elected Fellow of the American Mathematical Society for contributions to partial differential equations, nonlinear analysis, fluid mechanics, hyperbolic conservation laws, and shock wave theory.

2015

• A site for papers dedicated to Bryce McLeod is launched. Following the recent memorial workshop for J B McLeod, a site for papers dedicated to him has been launched. Details
• John F Nash Jr and Louis Nirenberg share the Abel Prize “for striking and seminal contributions to the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations and its applications to geometric analysis.”. Details

• Angkana Rüland of the Mathematical Institute in Oxford and Junior Research Fellow at Christ Church College has won the Hausdorff prize for the best thesis at the University of Bonn for her work on "On Some Rigidity Properties in PDEs".

2014

2013

• We are delighted that visiting Professor Michel Chipot, University of Zürich will be holding a mini lecture series, comprising of 4 one hour lectures entitled Asymptotic behavior of problems in cylindrical domains.

2011

• The 2011 SIAG/APDE Prize, SIAM, USA:
  
  The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM, USA) awards the SIAG/Analysis of Partial Differential Equations Prize (one prize every two years) to the authors of the most outstanding paper, as determined by the committee, on a topic in Partial Differential Equations published in English in a peer-reviewed journal in the four calendar years preceding the year of the award.
  
  The committee wishes to recognize Gui-Qiang G. Chen and Mikhail Feldman for their paper, "Global Solutions of Shock Reflection by Large-Angle Wedges for Potential Flow," Annals of Mathematics, Volume 171, Issue 2 (2010), 1067-1182, "in which they proved the existence and stability of a solution for the equations of two-dimensional compressible gas dynamics, for the case of a shock reflection from a wedge.  This problem, originating with work of Ernst Mach, has long defied careful mathematical analysis."

• Presentations from the Workshop on the Mathematics of weather and climate prediction held at the Met Office, Exeter from 30 March to 3 April 2009 are now online.
• After the Undergraduate Summer Research Project call in February 2009 the Centre received 39 applications for its 2009 call, from undergraduates at 16 institutions across the UK and EU. The calibre of the applicants was so high that the Centre will be awarding up to 8 bursaries of 6 weeks each instead of the anticipated 2 bursaries for 10 weeks each.
• Christof Melcher leaves the Centre to take up a senior Professorship in Germany.
• Event: Workshop on the mathematics of weather and climate prediction, Met Office, Exeter, 30 March – 3 April 2009. Co-organised by the Centre.
• Call goes out for the first Oxford Centre for Nonlinear PDE Undergraduate Summer Research Projects Scheme. Undergraduates in the middle years of their degree registered at any institution in the EU or UK can apply to undertake a summer research project in the area of PDE for which they will receive a weekly bursary and a small allowance for research consumables.
• Francois Genoud is welcomed to the Centre as a visiting postdoctoral researcher.

2008

• The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) announce that University of Oxford’s Mathematical Institute will receive £3.3m from the third round of Science and Innovation Awards to establish a world-class research centre in the analysis of non-linear partial differential equations (PDEs).
