Oxford Mathematics social media participant support
Background:
Our films showcase our work and our people. They are integral to attracting the best students and researchers and to demystifying our subject and our University. They go out on the following channels: X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and YouTube Shorts, and Bluesky.
Comments on films:
In all cases comments are permitted as these are an integral part of the platforms and provide useful feedback about followers and often stimulate mathematical debate. They also widen our reach as comments influence how the social media algorithms work.
The vast majority of comments are positive. Comments are monitored at least once daily by the External Relations Manager, following the criteria below. We cannot control if someone reposts our video, but we do pursue them if it is done without our consent.
Comments removed under the following criteria:
- Hate speech: all attacks on 'protected characteristics' - age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation. Followers will be banned.
- Trolling, defined as where this is clearly designed to cause upset. Followers will also be banned.
- If a personal accusation is made and a name used. Followers may be banned.
- Repeated comment, explicit comment, repeated unrelated or misleading comment, even if not personal, may be deleted and followers may be banned
- Sales and commercial self-promotion
- Comments featuring a link to another site may be removed
Comments that are not removed:
Comments on the work itself unless under the criteria above
Comments about the Department and its activities unless under the criteria above
Support for participants:
The External Relations Manager will follow up with participants after films are posted, irrespective of any comments on the posting of films.
We welcome participants who feel affected by comments, whether positive or negative, contacting the External Relations Manager and/or Human Resources for face-to-face support and discussion.
